Markup FAQ
What is markup?
Markup is the percentage added to cost to arrive at sell price. A $100 cost with 30% markup sells for $130.
Is markup the same as margin?
No. Margin is profit divided by sell price. The same $130 sale has about 23.1% margin, not 30%.
What markup do specialty trades use?
It varies by trade, risk, and overhead—many small contractors target 20–40% markup after covering burdened labor and materials.
